LASER is an acronym and stands for "Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation". In a nutshell: Light particles (photons) excited with current emit energy in the form of light. This light is bundled into a beam. With a laser, you can engrave virtually any design on different materials.
Laser engraving is the process of leaving a permanent deep mark in a material using a laser beam. Unlike other more traditional methods, the heat of the beam will melt and vaporise the portion of material that it is being aimed at. The result of laser engraving is permanent and very resistant to abrasion. The technique does not involve the use of inks.
Laser works to change the surface of the material in a manner which converts a high percentage of the light energy into heat, nothing to do with inks or colors. Some people paint the engaved part by using brush tools in order to get color effects.
